  • A microgrid coordinates local energy resources – including renewable energy sources - to provide secure and reliable electricity locally.
  • It can disconnect from the traditional grid and operate autonomously. 
  • A microgrid can improve community resilience by providing backup at times of emergencies.
  • It can also be used to reduce costs or provide services back to the main grid.


Moving some energy users off-grid can save hundreds of millions of dollars in network costs. This benefits everyone, including those on the main grid, because network costs are shared. Microgrids help communities to be more energy independent, more environmentally-friendly and they create employment opportunities for those communities.
