What’s on the way
Microgrid technology is becoming increasingly cost effective, creating the opportunity for reliable, low cost, low-emissions energy supply for regional communities and industries in off-grid and fringe-of-grid locations.
Supported by the $50m Regional Australia Microgrid Pilots Program.
Supported by the $50.4m Regional and Remote Communities Reliability Fund - Microgrids.
Improving resilience of energy supply in the face of bushfires and extreme weather events.
Creating energy independence and employment opportunities.
- A microgrid coordinates local energy resources – including renewable energy sources - to provide secure and reliable electricity locally.
- It can disconnect from the traditional grid and operate autonomously.
- A microgrid can improve community resilience by providing backup at times of emergencies.
- It can also be used to reduce costs or provide services back to the main grid.
Moving some energy users off-grid can save hundreds of millions of dollars in network costs. This benefits everyone, including those on the main grid, because network costs are shared. Microgrids help communities to be more energy independent, more environmentally-friendly and they create employment opportunities for those communities.
